Supporting local programs to empower citizens

Young Sparks for Hout Bay Program

The Young Sparks for Hout Bay program makes small grants to support community projects initiated by the youth of Hout Bay. With financial support from the Coalition for Effective Local Democracy (CELD), these grants are awarded to assist one-off community improvement projects. Projects can cover a range of community service. Examples include (but are not limited to) :

  • Improvements to public facilities such as playing fields.
  • Handyman services to seniors or other individuals in particular need of assistance as identified by a church or public agency.
  • Creative engagement of young people in dance and other performing arts.
  • Youth mentoring projects.
  • Environmental projects.
  • Public safety projects (including fire, health, etc).

Criteria: Grants are awarded based on the following criteria :

  • Commitment of young people to join together as project volunteers.
  • Impact of the project in benefiting the citizens of Hout Bay.
  • Ability of the work plan and budget to achieve those benefits within 3 months.

Eligible Uses of Grants: Young Sparks grants can only be used for project materials. Funds will be disbursed based on invoices from Hout Bay businesses, with payment made directly to those businesses. Grants may not be used for wages, equipment purchases, or for any personal expenses of project volunteers. Any funds not used at the end of the project will be reallocated to future projects.

Who May Apply: Young persons of any age who live in Hout Bay may submit applications for a Young Sparks public service grant .For those under 18, there must be a supporting signature from a parent or other adult.

The Young Sparks Board will review all written submissions and select the winning proposal. Members of the Young Sparks for Hout Bay Board are:
